Front Sight idea

Postby pastorfarley » Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:37 pm

I was surfing the web and found a shotgun sight called Uni-Dot. The principle behind it is a cylinder with a strip of colored fiber optic in front of it. The fiber optic is only visible when the shooter's eye is properly lined up, the gun is properly "mounted"

This lead me to wonder if a similar, though smaller, system could be used on a pistol as a front sight only system for defensive shooting. When the dot is visible the pistol is pointing at the object covered by the front sight. If the system on a shotgun can help hit a gamebird at 20-50 yards, it would seem usable at under 25 feet. A similar system has been developed for bows. A standard rear sight could be mounted when precision accuracy was demanded.

The company claims that the sighting system for shotguns trains the shooter to mount the gun properly, this may transfer to a shooter bringing the pistol up to the point the eye is looking as a trained action giving faster target aquisition.

I know what you're saying, I am sure it is already patented. I think being able to look at the intended target and having practiced bring the pistol up into the line of sight and without focusing on the front sight, only seeing the "flash" of the fiber optic, know the pistol is aimed within x inches of where you are looking would be a benefit.

Well, years later, I have "bought" (with credit card points) a 2.5" shotgun sight and mounted it on a full sized pistol. Haven't been able to shoot it much. We just bought a house, after living on the road for over two years. Hopefully I will be getting to the range for more testing next year.
