Quality 9mm/.40 Pistols

I am looking for a good pistol primarily as a home defense gun. Whatever I end up with it will see a good bit of range time as well since I just plain out like to shoot as well. I have a preference for a gun that is available in either 9mm/.40 so that I can shoot it in both and see which I prefer. The one hang up I seem to be having is finding a good pistol that has manual release safety. I have to have this because I am going to start teaching my 4 year old about guns and want her to have an easy visual for a safety. No I am not going to have her be shooting it anytime soon, but want to educate her about guns long before she actually fires one. Right now my leading choice is a USP 9mm. The other catch is I need it to be 50 state legal as I am in the US Navy and could end up anywhere. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Glock is out. S&W M&P or Springfield XD are good quality guns you might want to check out. I personally shoot the .40 but would highly recommend staying with the 9mm. Todays defensive ammo is fine in 9mm. I also own a FNP-40 which is a large gun but has a DA/SA hammer and manual safety. It is a good range and home defense gun but will not work for concealed carry. The other two I mentioned will work for concealed carry and home/car defense.

CZ makes some really good pistols that might fit the bill. I'm thinking about trading my Glock 36 for a CZ-75B. FN is also a good pistol. My XD-45 has a manual safety and a grip safety. You'll have to get the California version with ten round mags.

Good luck. The state California has determined that 11 rounds is too dangerous but ten is OK.

Thanks for the tips. I'm not worried about conceled carry and actually prefer a full frame. I had forgotten about CZ so I will make sure I look at them.

Glock! Theres plenty of time to educate her on the safety issue unless you want her to start shooting at age 5.

Will, Are you seriously thinking of dumping a Glock for CZ???

Not that it isn't a good Gun, But a Glock you can always depend on!

Don't buy anything until you can get one in your hand. I was interested in a CZ 9 awhile back because they are a decent pistol. What stopped me was the trigger reach. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed that, but it's quite a reach, even for my mid size paws.

Czs are good guns but if it doesn't fit you try something else.
